This specimen was lot 24702 in Heritage sale 3032 (Chicago, April 2014), where it sold for $3,055. The catalog description[1] noted, "Napoleon III gold 50 Francs 1856-A, Paris mint, MS64 NGC. A wonderful example with illustrious surfaces and bold details, among the finest-known graded example[s] in this select grade." This type was struck 1855-59 for France at Paris and Strasbourg, superseding the forty francs of Louis Philippe. It is not rare, particularly in this lightly circulated condition, and most specimens trade for their bullion value. This is a common date.
