SB1021-72385r.jpg
Stephen Album internet sale 28, lot 1224

The first specimen was lot 72385 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. 1/2 Skilling, 1832. Stockholm Mint. Karl XIV Johan. NGC MS-62 Brown. This boldly struck and nicely preserved example displays rich chocolate brown patina offering much originality." By the reform of 1830, 32 skilling banco = one riksdaler. This one-year type is scarce and is the last of the denomination. Carl was originally a general in Napoleon's army who accepted the Swedish king's invitation to marry the king's daughter and become his heir. He ruled 1818-44 and his descendants reign over Sweden today. The second specimen was lot 1224 in Stephen Album internet sale 28 (Santa Rosa, CA, July 2024), where it sold for $132. The catalog description[2] noted, "SWEDEN: Karl XIV, 1818-1844, AE 1/2 skilling, 1832, lovely even toning, a wonderful example, PCGS graded MS64 BN, ex Joe Sedillot Collection."

Recorded mintage: 288,000.

Specification: 8.50 g, copper, 24 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-637; Sieg-15; AAH-131.
