This specimen was lot 27179 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $258.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Saxe-Old-Gotha. Johann Casimir and Johann Ernst II Taler 1580, aVF, lightly porous surfaces and some small scratches noted. An uncommon type." Davenport lists this type for 1577-86 and notes it as fairly common. The division of Erfurt in 1572 permanently splintered Ernestine Thuringia into fragments which were not reunited until the establishment of the Weimar Republic in 1920.
