Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection, lot 1255
SB924-1255r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1255 in Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection (Copenhagen, September 2024), where it sold for €31,200 (about US$34,576 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Bright and Reflective Ducat of Karl XI, SWEDEN. Ducat, 1695. Stockholm Mint. Karl XI. NGC MS-61. Mintmaster: Anders Strömner (AS). Engraver: Arvid Karlsteen. VERY RARE with one a few traded over the last decades. This Ducat is exceedingly beautiful, with bright luster and a brilliant reflectivity. Unlike both the Hagander and the Ljunggren pieces, this one has not been bent, further adding to its desirability. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922). Ex: Axel A. Fröling Collection (Stockholm - 1857) Lot # 321"

This type was struck 1677-95 but all the issues were small, reflecting the king's poverty.

Recorded mintage: 1,683.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.972 fine gold, this specimen 3.48 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-45; KM-283; SM-52(49); SG-64; Bruun-12529.
