This specimen was lot 1546 in Jean Elsen sale 116 (Brussels, March 2013), where it sold for €250 euro (about US$380 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Charles X (1824-1830), AR 1 franc, 1825 H, La Rochelle. Rare. Très Beau (kingdom of France, Charles X (1824-30), silver franc of 1825, La Rochelle mint. Rare, very fine.)"
This issue, from the La Rochelle mint, is a rare date of a type struck 1825-30. All francs of Charles X are of this type with the exception of some very rare reeded edge specimens issued in 1830. It was demonetized in 1869. A complete set of this type comprises 84 date and mintmark combinations, many very rare. The entire production run, 1825-30, totaled about 5.3 million pieces. The production of five franc pieces in the same period was 123 million.
Specification: 23 mm diameter, 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM. Designed by Auguste François Michaut, 1786-1879.
Recorded Mintage: 23,374 (priced about five times the most common date).
