France 1825-A 5 francs
This specimen was lot 4699 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it sold for $948.75. The catalog description [2] noted, "France. 5 Francs, 1825-A (Paris). Charles X. Head left. Beautifully toned example. NGC graded MS-63." This type was struck during the reign of Charles X (1824-30) from numerous mints. The silver five francs of this regime are divided into two types, most easily distinguished by the position of MICHAUD's name near the base of the king's bust. The specimen shown is the first type and is a somewhat scarce date from the Paris mint. Many the 52 dates of this type are known from a handful (<10) of examples. The type is not difficult to find but is expensive in high grade. All silver five francs were officially recalled in 1928 but ceased to circulate after World War I. This coin was legal tender in the United States until 1857 at a value of 93 cents.
