This twenty centavo piece was minted in Santiago, Chile, in 1879-82 and 1893. This design also appeared on silver half decimos, decimos, fifty centavos and pesos of the period. This specimen is the overdate, 1880/79. This was introduced in 1863 as a 4.6 gram, 0.900 fine coin, then 5 grams, 0.835 fine in 1867, then this subtype in 1879, then 4 grams, 0.500 fine in 1890, then back to 5 grams, 0.500 fine in 1891 when a small issue of coins at 4.6 grams, .200 fine.
Recorded mintage: 6,846,000.
Specification: 5 g, 0.500 fine silver, .080 troy oz ASW, 20 mm diameter.
