Italy 1956-R 5 lire

Heritage sale 3067, lot 34616

This specimen was lot 34616 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $870. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Italy: Republic 5 Lire 1956-R MS64 NGC, Rome mint. A low mintage date for the type (with only 400,000 struck) that is particularly elusive in higher Mint State grades, this highest certified example for NGC features silvery surfaces with full cartwheel effects." The specimen shown is from a type struck in Rome 1951-2000. It superseded a larger aluminum coin (KM 89) struck 1946-50 which is now quite scarce in nice condition. This date is the only one with claims to be scarce.
