This specimen was lot 20557 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Bavaria. 5 Mark, 1906-D. PCGS PROOF-63 CAMEO. Deep mirror-like qualities exist in the fields with strong frost over the central motifs that produces borderline "Deep Cameo" contrast over the surfaces. Light handling, none of great detriment to the eye, determines the grade. The key date for the type with a SCWC value of $2,000 in MS-63 and EXTREMELY RARE in this elevated proof format with no appearances that we could locate in European auctions archives or elsewhere." This type was struck intermittently 1891-1913 and most dates are common. Otto's brother, Ludwig II, was deposed in 1886 and died a week later under very suspicious circumstances. Otto was also insane and was placed under a regency which lasted until his death in 1913.
Recorded mintage: 70,249, the rare date.
Specification: 27.77 g, 0.900 fine silver, 38 mm diameter.
