Stack's Bowers 2015 NYINC sale, lot 759

This specimen was lot 759 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $1,175. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. 20 Pfennig, 1877-F. PCGS MS-68. Fourth lowest mintage for the type. Only 77,000 were struck, and only Stuttgart minted 20 Pfennigs that year. This superb example has frosty luster and touches of old toning. Essentially flawless, and the highest example graded by 2 grade points at either PCGS or NGC." This coin is an silver twenty pfennig from a type issued 1873-77 from the Berlin (mintmark "A"), Hannover (mintmark "B"), Frankfurt (mintmark "C"), Munich (mintmark "D"), Dresden (mintmark "E"), Stuttgart (mintmark "F", shown here), Karlsruhe (mintmark "G"), Darmstadt (mintmark "H") and Hamburg (mintmark "J") mints. Under the German Empire of 1871-1918, the denominations of two mark and up were permitted for the formerly independent principalities while the lower denominations (one pfennig thru one mark) were minted to a unified design. This is a key date. When the twenty pfennig was revived in 1887, it was in copper-nickel (KM 9.1).
