This specimen was lot 20260 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $4,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. 5 Cents, 1909. PCGS MS-62 Secure Holder. Round (Maple Leaf)-Cross/Bow Tie. Fully struck with few noteworthy marks for the assigned grade and vibrant luster that aids the appearance and is suggestive of a higher grade. The most desirable variety of the three listed in the Charlton catalog and of great rarity in Mint State; the only other appearance of this variety in Mint State (also graded MS-62 by PCGS and at the time the only example graded) brought $8,225 in a 2016 Heritage sale." This type was struck 1902-10 for Edward VII. This date is scarce but is not the key, tho this variety is rare. The silver five cents was converted to nickel in 1922.
Recorded mintage: 1,983,725 (all varieties).
Specification: 1.15 g, 0.925 fine silver, 15.5 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 13.
