Heritage sale 3067, lot 31551
H3067-31551r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31551 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: James I (1603-25) gold Thistle Crown ND (1612-13) MS61 PCGS, Tower mint. Tower mm. Obv. Crowned rose dividing I-R. Crowned thistle dividing I-R. Lustrous, with minimal flaws and especially round compared to the normal uneven strike for the type. Lightly toning a red-orange over the rich golden surfaces, a superb example of this scarcer early denomination." While previous gold crowns had passed for five shillings, the thistle crown was worth only four. This denomination is unique to this reign.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.92 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: KM 37, Fr-238, S-2627, N-2096.
