Brazil 1776 4000 reis

Heritage sale 3026, lot 23782

This specimen was lot 23782 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $2,350. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Jose I 'Inverted Reverse' gold 4000 Reis 1776, AU58 NGC. 'Josephus Dominvs' type. A briefly circulated example with slight highpoint friction. A wonderful example of the type. From The RLM Collection, Part II." The type was struck 1751-77 without mintmark. Later types exist dated 1778-1822. It is the largest of the "moedas provinciales" series and the only one that can be called somewhat common.

Recorded mintage: 26,000 (all varieties).

Specification: 8.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, .237 troy oz AGW.
