This specimen was lot 23316 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $2,056.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Jose I gold 4000 Reis 1777-L, MS62 NGC, lightly toned with nearly full mint brilliance, scarce grade for this type." While the 4000 réis is relatively available, its fractions (2000 réis and 1000 réis) are much scarcer. The weight of the 4000 réis was lowered from 10.75 g to 8.07 g in 1749; consequently, the earlier issues are quite scarce. This product of the Lisbon mint is listed for 1763 and 1771-77.
Recorded mintage: 54,000.
Specification: 8.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, .237 troy oz AGW.
Catalog reference: KM 171.4.
