This specimen was lot 31183 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $1,527.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles III gold 2 Escudos 1771 Mo-MF VF35 NGC, Mexico City mint. A respectable example of the rare final date of the type, with good eye-appeal and problem-free surfaces. Seldom seen in any grade, one of 6 pieces noted by the cataloguer and apparently the only one offered publicly in recent years. Ex. Eliasberg Collection (ANR 4/2005, lot 3153 hammered for $2,000), From The Rudman Collection of Mexican Coins." All Mexican colonial gold may be considered scarce. This type, the second showing the "rat nose" bust of Charles III, was struck 1762-71 only. Despite the extended years of production, it is very scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.917 fine gold, .199 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-12427, KM 129, Cal-472.
