Papal States 1800-R scudo Dav-179

This type is listed for 1800 only. Pius VII endured considerable mistreatment at the hands of Napoleon and was forced to participate in his coronation as emperor. Later, after the Pope refused to embargo trade with Britain, the Papal States were annexed to France outright and the Pope was imprisoned. The Congress of Vienna reconstituted the Papal States intact as they were before the French Revolution. They would not be incorporated into the kingdom of Italy until 1870.
