SB222-74363r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74363 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $60. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Rupee, 1973-B. Bombay Mint. NGC PROOF-68. From a Proof-only series, struck in Nickel. A brilliant and pleasing coin with deep flashy surfaces." After independence in 1947-48, the British rupee was withdrawn and replaced by a note. One rupee coins were struck 1952, 1954, 1962, 1964, 1969 but never on a production basis. This type was struck for circulation 1970 only and for the proof sets of 1970-74. In 1982, US$1 = 9.3 rupees; today (July 2022), one US dollar = 79 rupees.

Recorded mintage: 7,567 proofs.

Specification: 10 g, nickel, 28 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-75.2.
