Heritage sale 3067, lot 31511
H3067-31511r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31511 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "Germany: Wilhelm I Proof "Small Eagle" 50 Pfennig 1877-A PR67 PCGS, Berlin mint. Bold cameo contrast, with brilliant white color. The strike is superb and the surfaces are free of mentionable flaws. Only two pieces have been certified, in Proof, of this rare issue, with this piece the finest of the two by three grades. This example is also the finest certified of the entire type. Extremely rare in this condition. From the Feeling Good Collection." This coin is a silver fifty pfennig from a type issued 1877 only from the Berlin (mintmark "A") mint. Under the German Empire of 1871-1918, the denominations of two mark and up were permitted for the formerly independent principalities while the lower denominations (one pfennig thru one mark) were minted to a unified design. This is a rather better type.

Recorded mintage: 6,745,959 plus 3,248,711 of the plain reverse (KM 6).

Specification: 2.77 g, 0.900 fine silver, 20 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 8, J-8.
