This specimen was lot 981 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €1,600 (about US$2,067 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"LAUENBURG, HERZOGTUM Julius Franz, 1666-1689. Reichstaler 1680, Lauenburg. RR Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Patina, kl. Prägeschwäche, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Lauenburg, Julius Francis, 1666-89, thaler of 1680, Lauenburg mint. Rare, attractive example, toned, cleaned, very fine to extremely fine.)"
Lauenburg, upstream of the Elbe from Hamburg, was ruled by a family of Saxon dukes from 1260 until 1689, whereupon it was annexed by Brunswick-Luneburg. The thalers from this locale are generally rare.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
