This specimen was lot 1169 in Jean Elsen sale 118 (Brussels, September 2013), where it sold for €200 (about US$315 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon III (1852-1870), AR 2 francs, 1866 K, Bordeaux. Petits coups sur la joue. Superbe (France, Napoleon III (1852-70), silver two francs of 1866, Bordeaux mint. Small nicks on the neck, extremely fine.)"

After the collapse of Napoleon's empire during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, it was superseded by the "Cérès head" type of 1870-95. It was officially withdrawn from circulation in 1928 and demonetized in 2005 but ceased to circulate after World War One.

Recorded mintage: 437,055.

Specification: 10 g, 0.835 fine silver, .289 troy oz AGW, 27 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Albert Désiré Barré (1818-1878).
