This specimen was lot 31179 in Heritage auction 3096 (Dallas, TX, March 2021), where it sold for $3,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "South Africa: Republic gold Proof "Protea - Soccer" 25 Rand 2002 PR68 Ultra Cameo NGC, Pretoria mint. This specimen was minted to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the founding of South Africa's national soccer team, Bafana Bafana. This popular issue depicts the national flower, the king protea, and two dueling soccer players. From the Paramount Collection." South Africa, after a turbulent history between English and Dutch settlers and the native population, was constituted the Union of South Africa in 1910. Coinage commenced in 1923. As gold is one of South Africa's chief exports, the Pretoria mint has devoted considerable effort to designing, producing and marketing gold NCLT's.
