This specimen was lot 771 in Jean Elsen sale 132 (Brussels, March 2017), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$2,153 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR écu à la cravate, 1673A, Paris. 1er type. Dit 'du Parlement'. D/ B. dr. et cuir. à d., portant une perruque, le cordon du Saint-Esprit et une cravate brodée. R/ Ecu de France couronné. Rare Fines griffes. Très Beau à Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV (1643-1715), silver écu of the necktie of 1673, Paris mint, first type, called "Parliament." Obverse: draped and armored bust to right, wearing a wig, the ribbonof the Order of the Holy Spirit and an embroidered cravat; reverse: crowned arms of France. Rare, fine scratches, very fine to extremely fine.)"
The écu à la cravate was struck 1672-85 at numerous mints in fairly large quantities. The type is now rare as it was one of the chief victims of overstriking during the reformations of the 1690's. This date is common for the type.
Recorded mintage: est. 1,200,000 to 1,500,000.
Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, plain edge, designed by Jean Warin or Isaac Briot, this specimen 27,19 g.
