This specimen was lot 981 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 180 CHF (about US$223 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Sachsen, Kurfürstentum, Albertiner Johann Georg I. 1615-1656. Taler 1647. Hksp. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Electorate of Saxony, John George I (1615-56), thaler of 1647. Mount mark, very fine to extremely fine.)"
Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. This coin was issued by the elector of Saxony in 1638-56 and is one of the common thalers of the seventeenth century.
