Stephen Album sale 32, lot 1327
Papal St SA32-1327r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1327 in Stephen Album sale 32 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "PAPAL STATES: Pius IX, 1846-1878, AE baiocco, 1847-B anno I, NGC graded MS62 BR." The first coinage reform in the Papal States was implemented in the early 1830's during the reign of Gregory XVI (1831-46). All the doppie, zecchini, guilii, testoni, etc., were dropped in favor of a silver scudo divided into one hundred baiocchi. This type was struck for Pius IX 1846-49 at Bologna and Rome.

Recorded mintage: 58,000 (years I and II).

Specification: copper, 10 g, plain edge, 30 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 1339.1; Berman-3325.
