This specimen was lot 475 in Ponterio sale 164 (New York, January 2012), where it sold for $2,070. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 4,000 Reis, 1721-R. João V (1706-50). NGC AU-58." This type was struck 1707-27. The weight of the 4000 réis was lowered from 10.75 g to 8.07 g in 1749; consequently, the earlier issues are quite scarce.
