Sincona sale 18, lot 1078

This specimen was lot 1078 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 2,200 (about US$2,899 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"4000 Reis 1721. Bahia. Vorzüglich. (Brazil, 4000 réis of 1721, Bahia mint, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1707-27. The weight of the 4000 réis was lowered from 10.75 g to 8.07 g in 1749; consequently, the earlier issues are quite scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 10.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, .317 troy oz AGW, this specimen 10.70 g.
