The was the Charlotte mint's first year of operation and the only year the Classic Head Half Eagle was struck at this mint. The 1838-C is arguably the most popular coin produced by this mint. This example exhibits the original green-gold coloration over crusty patina (skin) that is avidly pursued by Southern gold enthusiasts. It is the key date for the classic head half eagle of 1834-38.
Recorded Mintage: 17,179.
Specification: 8.36 g, 0.899 fine gold, 22. 5 mm diameter.
