This specimen was lot 39547 in Stack's Bowers Winter sale (Baltimore, November 2015), where it sold for $352.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 10 Soles, 1968. NGC MS-66. VERY RARE. Mintage of just 100 pieces. The only example seen at the grading services. A complete mystery how the coin did not receive a proof-like designation, the fields are deeply mirrored and produce a fabulous cameo effect. A piece that combines many of the most desirable attributes any collector could ask for in a RARE coin; low mintage, fabulous artistic qualities, and superlative preservation. This coin has all three on a mind-boggling scale!" This denomination, struck 1956-69, was theoretically a circulating coin but actually was a bullion piece like her sisters, the gold five, twenty, fifty and hundred soles.
Recorded mintage: 100.
Specification: 4.61 g, 0.900 fine gold, .132 troy oz AGW.
Catalog reference: Fr-81; KM-236.
