Künker sale 423, lot 37
Sincona sale 101, lot 3155

The first specimen was lot 37 in Künker Auction 423 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €700 (about US$991 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

(Holy Roman Empire, archduke Ferdinand, 1564-95, half guldenthaler or thirty kreuzer of 1566, Mühlau. Obverse: capped and armored half-length bust right, holding a scepter and sword, the value below; reverse: manifold arms of Hungary, Bohemia, Castile, Leon, Austria and Burgundy with the escutcheon of Tyrol and arabesques on the top and sides. Very rare, very fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 3155 in Sincona Auction 101 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 500 CHF (about US$754 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

Sehr selten. Fast vorzüglich. Feine Patina. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Ferdinand II, 1564-95, half guldenthaler of 1566, Mühlau mint. Obverse: armored half-length bust, breastplate decorated with diamonds. Rotated reverse, Very rare, About Extremely Fine, Nicely toned.)"

At this time, the half gulden or thirty kreuzer was five-twelfths of a thaler. Altho Hall in Tyrol claims to be the site of the first mechanized mint, that honor seems to belong to Mühlau, now a suburb of Innsbruck, where an experimental mint was set up in 1566. It operated only briefly before being moved to Hall.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 12.3 g, silver, the first specimen 11,77 g, the second specimen 11.93 g.

Catalog reference: M./T. 170.
