Morelos 1916 50 centavos

Stack's Bowers February 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73509

This specimen was lot 73509 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $100. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Morelos. 50 Centavos, 1916. NGC AU Details--Cleaned. At the high end of the scale for the type, this example is rather impressive, with strong details and bold appeal, despite the noted cleaning." During the Revolution, the state of Morelos was the home turf of Emiliano Zapata and his forces and he rarely ventured outside it. His influence came mostly from his proximity to Mexico City. By 1916, most of the fighting was over. The remaining campaigns were Carranza's destruction of the Zapatistas in 1918, followed by Obregon's overthrow of Carranza in 1920. The anarchy which caused the local issues was dissipating.
