Sincona sale 82, lot 1575

The first specimen was lot 20104 in Ponterio sale 176 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $6,462. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Elizabeth I, 1558-1603. Fine Sovereign of 30 Shillings, ND (1592-93). Tun. Queen seated holding orb and scepter; portcullis at her feet. Rv. Tudor rose with square topped shield center. A third Fine Sovereign, but with a different mark than the first two. Uniformly bright. The centers are weakly struck. Fine Plus. Ex: Gold & Silver Exchange Ltd., 1981." The second specimen was lot 1575 in Sincona sale 82 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 100,000 CHF (about US$133,830 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[3] noted, "Elizabeth I. 1558-1603. Fine Sovereign n. d. (1592-1595), Tower Mint. Sixth issue. Mintmark "tun". Selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung (Rare, especially in this condition). NGC MS61." Both Friedberg and Lobel list this coin as a fifth issue and the only sovereign (thirty shillings) of the reign. Seaby[2] classes this as a sixth issue.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: gold, 240 grains (15.54 g), the first specimen 230 grains; the second specimen 15.50 g.
