This type, the last demi-écu issued before the decimal reform instituted during the French Revolution, is the scarcest of the silver "Constitutional" types, which include 15 sols (1/8 écu), 30 sols (¼ écu) and one écu. Production of all the denominations ceased with the trial and execution of the king. The Paris mint (shown here) used the obverse legend "LOUIS XVI ROI DES FRANÇOIS;" other mints used "LOUIS XVI ROI DES FRANÇAIS" (KM 614).
