Ponterio sale 182, lot 1590

This specimen was lot 1590 in Ponterio sale 182 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $2,291.25. The catalog description^[1] noted, "RUSSIA. Ruble, 1723. NGC EF-45. Peter I (1689-1725)." The coinage of Russia of the eighteenth century is a confusing and fascinating subject. Many ruble types were issued only briefly and can be dated even if they don't bear dates, such as this one from Peter the Great. This type varies from Dav-1658 in the arrangement of the emperor's toga and armor. The rubles of Peter the Great were about 28 grams but shrank to 20 grams by the end of the reign of Catherine the Great.
