Künker Auction 425, lot 1043

This specimen was lot 1043 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €15,000 (about US$21,240 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"EUROPÄISCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH Louis XVI, 1774-1793. 1/2 Louis d'or au buste habillé 1777 I, Limoges. LUD · XVI · D · G · FR · - ET NAV · REX · Brustbild l. mit dem Ordensstern Saint-Esprit//CHRS · REGN · VINC · IMPER + 1777 Zwei aneinandergelehnte, ovale Wappenschilde, darüber Krone. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Feine Goldpatina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (kingdom of France, Louis XVI, half gold louis of the uniform of 1777, Limoges mint. Obverse: bust left wearing the Order of the Holy Spirit; reverse: adjacent oval arms of France and Navarre, crown above. Extremely rare, especially in this condition, fine gold toning, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This type was struck in tiny numbers 1775-84 and was melted when the gold louis was reduced to 7.65 g in 1786. The known dates for the type are 1775-A, 1776-L, 1777-I and 1784-A, with perhaps a dozen examples known between them.

Recorded mintage: 2,241.

Specifications: 4.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 4,04 g.
