This specimen was lot 8 in Künker Auction 423 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €18,000 (about US$25,488 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HABSBURGISCHE ERBLANDE-ÖSTERREICH · TIROL, GRAFSCHAFT, Erzherzog Sigismund, der Münzreiche, 1446-1496. Guldiner 1486, Hall. Stempelschneider Wolfgang Peck. · SIGISMVnDVS * - ARChIDVX · AVSTRIe · Der Erzherzog steht v. v., den Kopf etwas nach r. geneigt, mit Erzherzogshut und umgelegtem Mantel, mit der Rechten das Zepter schulternd, die Linke am Schwertgriff, zu den Seiten von einem Löwen gehaltener Wappenschild von Österreich und gekrönter Turnierhelm mit Pfauenfedern//Geharnischter Ritter mit Helm (mit Bändern) und Fahne reitet r., darunter die Jahreszahl 1486, umher 16 Wappenschilde (Burgau, Österreich ob der Enns, Pfirt, Habsburg, Hohenberg, Windische Mark, Kärnten, Alt-Österreich, Steiermark, Krain, Portenau, Montfort-Feldkirch, Tirol, Kyburg, Elsaß, Nellenburg). Von großer Seltenheit. Sehr schön +. Exemplar der Auktion Tkalec & Rauch, Wien 1985, Nr. 679. (Holy Roman Empire, county of Tyrol, archduke Sigismund the Rich, 1446-96, guldiner of 1486, Hall mint. Obverse: the capped and mantled archduke stands, head slightly right, with sword and scepter; a lion to the left supports the arms of Austria and a crowned and feathered helmet to the right; reverse: a armored and mounted knight charges right, the date below, sixteen shields around. Extremely rare, choice very fine.)"
This and the small date Dav-8087 are considered the very first thalers. The adaptation of the screw press to coining made this large piece practical.
