This specimen was lot 1722 in Jean Elsen sale 154 (Brussels, March 2023), where it sold for €850 (about US$1,101 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ETATS-UNIS, AV 10 dollars, 1901 S. Petites taches. Belle patine. Superbe. (United States, gold ten dollars of 1901, San Francisco mint. Small stains, nice patina, Extremely Fine.)"
This specimen is one of a type struck at the San Francisco mint 1854-89, 1892-1907. Issues are also recorded from Philadelphia (1839-1907), New Orleans (1841-60, 1879-1906), Carson City (1870-84, 1890-93) and Denver (1906-07). In 1866, the motto "In God We Trust" was added to the reverse. This date is common in all grades thru Uncirculated, altho gems are scarce.
