The specimen shown was lot 213 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 7,000 € (about US$10,868 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Carlos III (1759-1788). 1772/1. Santiago. A. 8 escudos. Segundo tipo de ´cara de rata´. Acuñación de 17000 ejemplares, incluyendo la fecha sin rectificar. Ligerísimos golpecitos. Bella. Muy rara y más así. EBC-/EBC. (Charles III, 1759-88, eight escudos of 1772, Santiago mint, second "rat face" type. Mintage of 17,000 including the regular date. Light nicks, handsome, rare, extremely fine.)"
This type is listed in the SCWC for 1764-72, which does not divide the typeinto "first" and "second" varieties. This specimen appears to use the standard bust of 1772-89 on the obverse and the small shield of 1764-72 on the reverse. All dates are rare.
Reported Mintage: 17,000.
