Stephen Album sale 43, lot 891

This specimen was lot 891 in Stephen Album sale 43 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2022), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "MYSORE: Tipu Sultan, 1782-1799, AE double paisa, Patan, AM1221, elephant facing left, date to right, some very light porosity, bold strike, choice VF, ex Arvind Sanghvi Collection." This type was struck AM 1219-1221. Numerous varieties exist but this is the only one with the elephant marching left. The Mauludi Era (AM) was a calendar invented and used only by Tipu Sultan and it lapsed after his death in battle in 1799.
