Stack's Bowers 2021 ANA sale, lot 44514

This specimen was lot 44514 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $576. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GERMANY. 2 Mark, 1933-F. Stuttgart Mint. NGC PROOF-66. A commemorative marking the 450th Anniversary of the birth of Martin Luther. A flashy Proof with reflective fields and frosted raised devices." Altho technically an issue of Nazi Germany, the design makes no reference to the new regime and was probably prepared before Hitler took over. Though the size of a quarter, its higher fineness meant that it contained the same amount of silver as the larger two mark of the Weimar Republic such as KM 45. This type was also minted at Munich ("D"), Muldenhutten ("E"), Berlin ("A"), Karlsruhe ("G") and Hamburg ("J").

Recorded mintage: 100,000 + proofs.

Specification: 8 g, 0.625 fine silver, 27 mm diameter.
