Sincona sale 20, lot 4328

This type is listed for 1846-56 and was struck in Rome (shown here) and Bologna. The early coinage of the Papal States used an antique monetary system. Five quattrini = one baiocco; 5 baiocchi = 1 grosso; 6 grossi = 4 carlini = 3 paoli = 1 testone; 10 testone = 1 doppia; 100 baiocchi = 1 scudo. After 1832, all the medieval coins were dropped except for the baiocco and the scudo. This half baiocco was 1/200 of a scudo and was equivalent to a half cent. It was coined prior to the reform as well. In 1866, the currency was reformed to use centesimi and lire in order to match that of the surrounding kingdom of Italy. In 1870, the Papal States were occupied and annexed by the kingdom of Italy and coinage ceased until 1929. This specimen was lot 4328 in Sincona sale 20 (Zürich, October 2014), where it sold for CHF 250 (about US$313 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1/2 Baiocchi 1851, AN V. Rom. FDC. (uncirculated.)"

Recorded mintage: 4,001,000 (years V and VI).

Specification: 5 g, copper, 23 mm diameter, this specimen 5.09 g.

Catalog reference: Mont-328, Pag. 512. Berman 3328, KM 1355.
