JE161-1207r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1207 in Jean Elsen sale 161 (Brussels, March 2025), where it sold for €2,800 (about US$3,646 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AV louis d'or à la croix de chevalier, 1719 K, Bordeaux. Dit "à la croix du Saint-Esprit". D/ T. laurée à d. R/ Croix de chevalier portant en coeur un écu rond aux trois lis. Extrêmement rare. Léger défaut de flan. Belle patine. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, gold louis of the Maltese cross of 1719, Bordeaux mint. Obverse: laureate bust right; reverse: Maltese cross with the round arms of France at the center. Extremely rare, light planchet defect, nice patina, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

Droulers[2] notes this type, called a louis d'or à la croix du Saint Esprit, was struck in France 1718-19 and replaced the louis d'or de Noailles, which was 12.23 grams. This is a rare date.

Recorded mintage: limonite[2].

Specification: 9.79 g, 0.917 fine gold, 26 mm diameter, reeded edge, this specimen 9,76 g.
