This specimen was lot 1180 in Sincona sale 93 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 16,500 CHF (about US$22,869 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RUSSLAND Kaiserreich und Föderation, Nicholas I. 1825-1855, Rouble 1839, St. Petersburg Mint, SPB NG. Sehr selten, Vorzüglich, Leicht gereinigt, Very rare. 40 roubles according to Petrov. 40 roubles according to Ilyin, Extremely Fine, Lightly cleaned."
This type was struck 1832-58 in large quantities but is today very rare in nice condition. This is the key date of the type, rarer even than the commemorative ruble struck for the battle of Borodino.
Recorded mintage: 36,000.
