This specimen was lot 746 in Sincona sale 69 (Zürich, May 2021), where it sold for 100 CHF (about US$133 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN, KIRCHENSTAAT. Pius IX. 1846-1878. 2 Baiocchi 1849 / Anno IV R, Roma. Fast FDC. Kleine Flecken. (Papal States, Pius IX, 1846-78, double baiocchi of 1849, Rome mint. About uncirculated, Small spots.)"
The early coinage of the Papal States used an antique monetary system. After 1830, five quattrini = one baiocco; 100 baiocchi = one scudo. In 1866, the currency was reformed to use centesimi and lire in order to match that of the surrounding kingdom of Italy.
