Oman, long a British protectorate, achieved full independence in 1971. Coinage began that year. She has watched enviously as her neighbors, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, harvest billions of dollars by selling oil, of which little occurs in Omani territory. This specimen was lot 3103 in Sincona sale 80 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 650 CHF (about US$779 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"OMAN, Quabus bin Sa'id, 1970-2020. 50 Baisa 1394 AH (1974). Goldabschlag zu Präsentationszwecken. Sehr selten. Nur 250 Exemplare geprägt. FDC. (sultanate of Oman, Quabus bin Sa'id, 1970-2020, fifty baisa of AH 1394. Off metal strike in gold for presentation. Very rare. Only 250 pieces struck, Uncirculated.)"
