Sincona sale 87, lot 2239

This specimen was lot 2239 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 1,400 CHF (about US$1,885 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Münster, 2 Taler 1534, Wiedertäufer. Prägung des 17. Jahrhunderts. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Hübsche Patina. (Germany, bishopric of Munster, double thaler of 1534, struck in the seventeenth century. Very fine-extremely fine, Attractively toned."

The original "Anabaptist" thaler was struck in the city of Munster in 1534 during the attempt to establish a communal sectarian government there. Note the absence of any reference to Franz von Waldeck, prince-bishop of Munster. This double thaler was struck later as a souvenir.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 59.46 g.

Catalog reference: KM MB90, Geisberg 6, Dav-9583B.
