Sincona sale 85, lot 2036

This specimen was lot 2036 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 200 CHF (about US$269 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"CHILE, Republik, seit 1818. 2 Pesos 1858, Santiago. Sehr schön, Kratzer. (Republic of Chile, since 1818, two pesos of 1858, Santiago mint. Very fine. Scratches.)"

This type was struck 1856-62 and 1865. While it has a modest catalog value, it is seldom seen. A later type (KM 143) had a slightly refined design.

Recorded mintage: 56,000, including an 1858/7 overdate.

Specification: 3.05 g, 0.900 fine gold, 17 mm diameter, this specimen 3.06 g.
