This specimen was lot 2253 in Sincona sale 80 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 1,500 CHF (about US$1,798 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"GERMANY | Ostfriesland, Grafschaft, Edzard II., Christoph und Johann, 1540-1566. Dicke Penning 1562, Emden. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Attraktives vorzüglich Exemplar. Winzige Kratzer auf dem Avers, sonst überdurchschnittlich gut ausgeprägt. (county of Ostfriesland, Edzard II, Christopher and John, 1540-66, thick penny of 1562, Emden mint. Very rare in this condition, Attractive extremely fine specimen, Tiny scratches on obverse, otherwise extraordinarily well struck.)"
This type was struck 1562-63. It was probably intended to be a quarter thaler. The counts struck a mix of German denominations (thalers, schillings, goldgulden) and Dutch denominations (krumsteerts, stubers and vliegers) and were often accused of counterfeiting both.
