Sincona sale 6, lot 1268
Rethel in 1648

This specimen was lot 1268 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 16,000 CHF (about US$19,688 with buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH Arches Carlo I Gonzaga, Herzog von Nevers & Rethel, 1595-1637; Mantua und Montferrat, 1630-1637. Quart d’écu 1608, Charleville. @CAROL·GONZAGA·D·NIVERN·ET RETH Kreuz mit Lilien an den Balkenenden. Rv. `SVP·PRINCEPS·ARCHENSIS·1608 ` FI – DES Gekröntes Wappen zwischen zwei Adlern. Von grösster Seltenheit. Wohl unediertes Unikat. Feine Patina. Vorzüglich. Ex Auktion Ratto, 1. 3. 1962, Lot 259. Charleville wurde am 6. Mai 1606 von Herzog Carlo I. Gonzaga gegründet. Der neue Herzogssitz ersetzte das mittelalterliche Dorf Arches. (France, duchy of Nevers and Rethel, Charles I Gonzaga, 1595-1637, duke of Mantua and Montferrat, 1630-37, quarter écu of 1608, Charlesville mint. Obverse: floriate cross; reverse: crowned arms between two eagles. Of the highest rarity, perhaps unique, fine patina, extremely fine. From Auktion Ratto, January 1962, Lot 259. Charleville was founded by the duke in 1606 and his mint established there.)"
