SB122-1424r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1424 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Venice. Ducatone, ND (1767)-DG. Alvise Mocenigo IV. NGC MS-61. Sharply detailed with a base of rich olive-brown tone over both sides that contains instances of attractive multicolored iridescence. RARE as a type and especially so in this certified Mint State quality." Mintmaster DG stands for Domenigo Gritti, who served 1762-63 and 1767. A ducatone had a face value of 124 soldi whereas a ducato was 90 soldi and a scudo was 140 soldi or seven lire. This type is listed for 1763, 1767, 1769-71 and 1778 but is among the more common of this denomination.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.10 g, 0.948 fine silver, 43 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-664; Dav-1559; Paolucci-23.
