Künker sale 400, lot 51

This specimen was lot 51 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €3,800 (about US$4,930 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BAYERN, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1623 KURFÜRSTENTUM, Ferdinand Maria, 1651-1679. Dukat 1663, München. Präsent der bayerischen Landstände zur Geburt der Prinzessin Louise Margarete. GOLD. RR Min. gewellt, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, electorate of Bavaria, Ferdinand Maria, 1651-79, ducat of 1663, Munich mint, presented by the Bavarian estates on the birth of princess Louise Marguerite. Very rare, slightly wavy, very fine to extremely fine.)

Zur Geburt der Prinzessin Louise Margarete am 18. September 1663 ließen die bayerischen Stände diesen prachtvollen Dukaten mit dem Porträt der Kurfürstin Henriette Adelheid aus dem Hause Savoyen prägen. Der Dukat nennt seine Auftraggeber auf der Rückseite: A DEVOTISSIMIS BAVARIE STATIBVS (= "Von den sehr ergebenen bayerischen Ständen"). Die kleine Prinzessin wurde nur zwei Jahre alt und starb am 10. November 1665 in München. Sie ist wie vier ihrer sieben Geschwister in der neu erbauten Münchener Theatinerkirche begraben. (For the birth of Princess Louise Margarete on September 18, 1663, the Bavarian estates had this magnificent ducat minted with the portrait of Electress Henriette Adelheid of the House of Savoy. The ducat names its patrons on the back: A DEVOTISSIMIS BAVARIE STATIBVS (= "From the very devoted Bavarian estates"). The little princess was only two years old when she died on November 10, 1665 in Munich. Like four of her seven siblings, she is buried in the newly built Theatinerkirche in Munich.)"
